Reasons Why I Hate Kate Austin of Lost

Last week’s season finale of Lost, The Incident, pissed me off through the one medium of the show that always pisses me off—Kate.  After getting past all the mystical shits and unpredictable events that always make up a Lost season ending episode, what you’ve got to notice is the predictable reactions from the show’s weakest character, Kate Austen.  In it I saw Kate fucking Austen being Kate—which is to say she was incredibly annoying and all acting like she knows what she’s talking about and generally slowing down the story and getting in the way and getting a more interesting character killed (although not so interesting in this episode)—and I don’t think I can take much more of her crap.  When the show ends, I have two things that must happen for me not to be seriously disappointed.  The first, previously mentioned, is that the real Locke had better be ruling the Island when shit comes to a close, and the second, is that Kate had better die. I am fed up with her whole sanctimonious, self-righteous bullshit—using her sex to get the shit she wants, slapping any number of men, just letting cooler people die, etc.—and I can’t wait for the show to hold its little tribal counsel and finally vote her off the fucking Island.  The only episodes of Lost I have hated were episodes that focused on her.  She’s manipulative and stupid and self-absorbed and boring and pointless and makes others around her seem like tools. It’s like she is Meg Griffin.  A while back I found someone’s assessment of Kate’s character which came in the following four phrases, which are spot on:

1. I’m pretty.

2. What should we do, Jack?

3. Shut up, Sawyer.

4. I’m coming along whether you want me to or not!

Yeah, Kate in a nutshell.  So with that finale, I am finally prompted to write out my Ten Reasons Why I Hate Kate Austen.  Here goes.

1. She’s Fickle- We can never be sure whom she is going to sleep with this week or how her sexual escapades will end up because she is constantly changing her mind about what the hell she is doing using her sexual allure as like a female executive trying to sleep her way to the top.  She makes out with Sawyer one minute and then beats him down with a suitcase or slaps him across the face or whatever.  Then once she gets off the Island she hops in bed with Jack and they were supposed to get married even, but she is sneaking around doing things for Sawyer.  When Jack gets all fussy and points out that he has repeatedly saved her and what not she says she doesn’t want him acting like that around her “son” and Jack utters a serious burn with “you’re not even related to him.”  Woo, ultimate face.  So now she hates Jack for speaking the truth and the wedding is off.  For Christ’s sake Kate, either pick Sawyer or Jack, quit bouncing back and forth to whichever one is more useful at the time.  She is always turning these leader types into heartsick idiots that she walks all over when she wants something.  She’s like a parasite befriending Sawyer for the shit he hoarded when they first crashed and then sidled up to Jack because he was the leader and saw the power of his position as her opportunity to be the Island’s Lady Macbeth or something.  It pisses me off that she keeps using everybody for her own personal gain and just keeps on lying to them to get it.  I pity the both of them for mainly just having to deal with her bullshit.  Next season, look for the reemergence of Skate (Sawyer + Kate = Skate) since Kate pretty much did nothing to help Sawyer help save Juliet (See Reason #2 for more on that), her competition, and hey hey, he’s now single again and Jack has sort of spiraled down the down the drain and lost his faith in humanity.  But maybe the existential Jack will grow on her.  Who knows with her.

2. Gets People I Like Killed (Or Seemingly Killed)- As hinted in Reason #1, she keeps on getting more interesting characters killed for absolutely NO reason whatsoever.  In the Lost time-line, the first death she was responsible for was that of her abusive father, which was justified I guess, but I don’t care about that.  Then came her childhood sweetheart Tom who she got killed when she was escaping from the law by busting through a barricade and he got hit by a bullet meant for her.  What does she do, nothing, she just leaves.  Again I don’t care; there isn’t anything of interest that has to do with Kate’s back-story.  But then once she gets on the Island is when the her getting people killed starts to drive me crazy.  There was the guy who was extraditing her back to the states who was dying anyway, maybe, and I assume Kate practically begged Sawyer to “end his pain” by giving him a quick death but only makes it way worse by shooting him in the lung instead of the heart.  Around the same time, she as well as Jack and Charlie let the pilot of 815 go walking around outside of the cockpit with the Monster making noises, failing to warn him that there might be danger.  He then gets eaten by the Monster and we later see him up in a tree all mutilated and all—yeah, I acknowledge this one might be a stretch, but the rest are not.  When they find Charlie in the jungle pretty much dead, having been hanged in a tree by Ethan, who was a serious bad ass, all she did was stood there and cried.  Way to help out, Kate.  Great effort there just standing there in the way and crying while Jack has to do everything.  But Charlie lived that near-death-experience.  Then there was the most infuriating one where she was supposed to go get Jin from the inside the freighter but instead stood around on the deck with her thumb up her ass.  Ten minutes after Kate was all, oh don’t go, Sun, you’re holding Aaron and pregnant and stuff, I will go get Jin for you, you get on the chopper, we see Kate finally try to go down into the freighter.  What was so goddamn important Kate, that’s what I’d like to know?  But Jack stops her saying something about him not leaving without her and they all look down at Jin as the ship explodes, again an inspired performance from Kate.  Way to make the extra effort there.  That made their flight back toward the Island pretty awkward.  So when Sun said to her old man, that she blames two people for the death of her husband and one of them was him, I figured the other one must surely be Kate for dicking around and not doing what she said she was going to do.  But frustratingly this turns out to be false and Sun and Kate are great old friends back on the mainland.  What the shit?  If I were Sun I would be pulling me some hair and punching the so called tough girl in the face instead of taking care of her stolen kid.  But Jin somehow survived, we think, but he could just be an incarnation of his form as the counterpart to the Locke imposter or something.  We shall see about that next season.  Then there was the death of my second favorite character (Locke being the first), Daniel Faraday, which she just let happen as she always does.  When Kate and Jack go along with Faraday on into Crazytown as he was about to go into the Others’ camp where he gets shot and killed by his mother, then pregnant with him, Jack was about to stop him but Kate was all “no Jack, don’t go.”  Thanks Kate, thanks for stopping Jack from ending the whole Infinite Jest-ish “the woman who kills you is always your next life's mother” thing.  Yeah, that was awesome.  Ugh, fucking Kate.  And then there was the season finale, when Juliet was dangling there above that electromagnetic hole with Sawyer trying to pull her up and Kate did what Kate does and just stood there.  Nicely done.  I mean did I expect anything more from her than to stand around awkward doing nothing when lives are at stake.  No, not really.  She was predictably unhelpful.  That bitch.

3. She’s Annoying- First, there is that whole bit about her trying to be the tough, strong, kick-ass-and-take-names female on the Island but then she does things like cry over a toy plane. Its like we get it Kate, you are a fugitive, but that doesn’t make you a hard ass.  Give up the act and stop making everyone’s life harder by trying to prove you’re a free spirit who doesn’t need anybody’s help.  Because Kate, if anyone does, its you.  Just stop.  Its getting embarrassing how everyone else keeps having to save you.  Also, she is ALWAYS interrupting people, suggesting that she feels what she has to say is way more important than whatever Hurley and Miles are saying.  What Kate has to say is rarely that important or interesting.  I can’t really remember any positive contribution she has ever made to life on the Island.  All she does is whine and lie and make a mess of things.  Its like to get anything useful or truthful out of her you have spend an entire episode twisting it out of her when she could have just said or done whatever in the first minute or so.  This is connected to another annoying fact about her, which is that she is a busybody, always butting into people’s business (like she did when she screwed everything up by talking to Ben’s dad) and asking about their pasts and all that but won’t say anything about hers.  When we finally figure out what she is doing it is always something really stupid, again I reference the goddamned toy plane, that really infuriated me.  I guess she did get some information out of Miles but that was only for her own personal gain (See Reason #4).

4. She’s Unbelievably Self-Centered- She is unable to think about anyone but herself, ever, and is the most egocentric character in the show.  The only thing she really ever did was pull some bullshit con to take Miles to Ben but that was done only to get information about herself.   Always begging to be included and whining when being left out, she just has to tag along no matter who protests for whatever sound reasons so as to not to miss out on any of the action.  But she never follows orders so even when she is ordered not to come along, of course she follows the group anyway which always ends with her getting captured and her needing to be rescued thus ruining whatever mission the group is on.  Sneaky bitch.  She is a manipulative liar that lacks all empathy and care for others showing no conscience whatsoever in doing stupid things that she thinks she must do to survive.  Her megalomania is such that she couldn’t even get over herself when delivering Claire’s baby, Aaron, saying, “I’m scared too.”  Why is that do you think?  Maybe because she is a sociopath, I mean she does steel that baby later.

5. She’s Got The Worst Backstory- Her whole ridiculous pre-Island life was basically a way to give her character cause to whine for the entire run of the show.  It doesn’t make her look tough or anything and her flashbacks don’t really make any sense when you think about them long enough.  A fugitive from law being chased by the whole world it seems for blowing up some douchbag?  I think not.  I just want to grab her by freckled arms and scream “We get it, you’re a victim, you’re the way you are because your dad (that you thought was your step dad) beat your mom, but you blew him up. And instead of being grateful that you blew him up your mom betrayed you and still made you stand trial when you got back from the Island, but hey, she got over it and you didn’t go to jail.  Seriously, we get it.  Poor Kate.  Now stop bitching about it every other freaking episode, we aren’t going to forget it so you can stop reminding us all the time.”

6. Gets Away With Everything And Constantly Whines- Which brings me to the obvious fact that she gets away with everything.  No one seems to care that she is constantly ruining whatever people are doing to better their lives on and off the Island.  She didn’t get in any trouble for murdering her old man, ducking the conviction by clinging to her stolen child and with the help of Jack and that incredibly dumb story he told in court that made her into some kind of a hero, which she isn’t, that was so lame and impossible it just made me want to throw up; no one lets the Others kill her for sneaking around when she should have stayed put; people defend her when her actions screw up their lives directly, as was the case when her erratic behavior tipped off Ben’s dad to the fact that she knew more about all that was involved in the shooting of little Ben than she let on, having Jack, Juliet, and Sawyer stick up for her, resulting in the end of Suliet (Sawyer + Juliet) and the comfortable life they had developed with the D.H.A.R.M.A. Initiative; etc.  She manages all this simply by putting on a pouty face (her only face) which affords her anything she wants.

7. Steals Babies/Screws up Children- Another thing she got away with was steeling Aaron away from the Littleton family to use him for all her emotional needs, for shame Kate.  How does the media not follow up on the apparent problems with the time-line/pregnancy stuff?  I think that would have been something that people would have noticed when they captured her.  In any case, Kate was well on her way on her mission to screw up a little kid before she finally did the right thing and gave Aaron to Claire’s mom while spilling the beans, as she always does, on the real story of Flight 815.  So when the blond lady who looked like Claire from behind appeared that she was running away with Aaron to live amongst the crazies or wherever, for a second I thought she would lose him, which would serve her right, and we would be rid of Aaron, at least for a while.  Yeah, he is a little kid… but he has to be the most irritatingly bad child actor ever, way more so than those Olsen twins on Full House, which is no small feet.  For a while I thought he had Down syndrome.   Every single time he says “mommy” or “juice box” I have to fight back the feeling that I am about the spill the groceries all over the couch and coffee table in the living room where I watch TV.  So why all of the sudden did she give Aaron over to an actual blood relative?  So she could basically watch him for a while as she goes back to the Island to find Claire and bring her back to raise her son.  Yeah right, she was tired of playing house like (in one of her painful-to-watch flashbacks) when she married Captain Hammer (from Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog) only to drug and run out on him when things got difficult.

8. The Producers Have Serious Kate Love- Cassidy was right about Sawyer and his motivation for jumping off the chopper, the reason he deplaned in such a dramatic way wasn’t to save the woman he loved, oh no, it was to get away from the succubus that is Kate.  Yeah, Sawyer had the right idea.  Get a clue Lindeloff/Cuse.  Not even your own fictional characters can stand her.  But they have themselves some serious love for Ms. Austen.

It would be great if they would get over her apparent hotness like everyone else and realize there is no use for Kate and kill her off which they won’t.  She’s a criminal with a heart of gold just like every chick in Brisco County Jr., Cuse’s first show, staring one Bruce “Jack of All Roles” Campbell, which is pretty awesome, yeah yeah, we understand that you love this type of female character…but this has got to stop already.  Jack, who seems more annoyed with her than anything else, was willing to go back in time and take incredibly drastic action by blowing up the Island either erasing the 3-years he knew her which she of course is against because that would mean her going to jail since her celebrity status couldn’t possibly save her or killing him.  Whatever happens, or doesn’t, its clear that Jack is hell bent on removing her from his life by any means necessary.  Her only merit was as one in a boring love triangle (or square I guess) that was the worst part of the show.  Any episode that focuses on her ends up sucking, therefore, they should have done the thing that talked about doing where Vincent had a flashback, which would have been awesome, I love that dog, but instead we got Kate overload.  Boo.  It isn’t so bad, I guess, that she is irrelevant as far as the story goes but the screen time she gets is unreal.  The episodes without Kate are almost always great but these are few and will probably disappear as the two camps, in 1977 and 2007, start to bridge the time gap.  Like that kid in your neighborhood growing up that was an asshole and everyone hated but always found out when and where you were hanging out or the guy trying too hard to get laid at a party, Kate never goes away.

9. She Lacks Self-Awareness- This, I think but cannot prove, is one of the reasons her mother hates her.  First of all, she killed her dad because she could tell her mother really loved him and took it upon herself to end the relationship.  Of course she didn’t see her mom turning her in coming because she can’t tell what people think of her.  All she sees is this persona she has constructed and follows that without looking back, ever.  On the Island, she believes her place is that of a strong semi co-leader instead of the wimpy, annoying, crying waste of space she really is.  She has always been weak link of the show/the Islanders with her whining and inability to make a rational decision for herself basing her actions on her unreliable emotional state at that exact moment.  It’s like she never developed the ability to look at the facts as they are when doing something and not just follow her impulses.  That is probably why she can’t help but jumping into bed with Jack and/or Sawyer seeing as how she can’t really function without a man around to manipulate first, including stolen baby Aaron.

10. Fucks Everything Up- This is her main problem, this constantly turning things into shit for everyone while offering no help in fixing things.  Usually the Losties are correcting some mistake she made or was in some way responsible for while she just sort of stands around all pathetic.  When she didn’t cause whatever new development, she is more than likely working on her own agenda that opposes what the majority has decided is right.  The most predictable part of Lost is that Kate will defy everyone with her ridiculous horseshit and do what she wants consensus be damned.  Like when Kate, in her ever-stupid-way, rushes to save the young Ben that Sayid tried to kill in order to spare their past selves that are confusingly in the future from the manipulating maniac he grows into.  Pretty much everyone agrees that Ben’s death here would be a good thing and they should just let him die, but oh ho, not Kate, who doesn’t think any child should die, after all young Ben is a victim too.  Not even if you know that he’s eventually going to kill a bunch of your friends, the entire D.H.A.R.M.A. Initiative, and a bunch of people who may or may not deserve it, not to mention tried to take the baby you rightfully stole and then telling those incredible lies that is just one series in a long and proud career of manipulation that gets you and the few friends that the adult version of this dying kid has yet to kill trapped-once again-on the this crazy patch of land that happens to be a time machine to boot that you flings you back some thirty goddamned years in the past.  Really Kate?  Fucking really?  Well, if anyone were to snatch away the hope that Sayid gave them by nearly de-mapping some asshole little kid who grows into a mass-murdering genocidal maniac, it would have to be Kate.

I haven't read all of this yet, but what I've read was spot on and hilarious.

God, I hate Kate so much. She has single handedly made this show worse on more occasions than I can count.

yah man, she got boring after the first season. her character started to stagnate in both the island and the flashes...i am typing this as one of her flashbacks is playing in season five lol.

Hell yeah. I just got done watching "eggtown" Kate needs to DIE!

I TOTALLY agree. Where are the complex and tough women who are not bimbos? Why do so-called hot chicks have to be lead characters? I find Evangeline Lilly to be a stilted actress and her character is cruddy. I miss Gillian Anderson's Scully...

I'd never seen Lost until 4 days ago, and I'm now 4 episodes deep in season 5, thanks to Netflix.
I'm writing this in fits and starts because, as other comments suggest, there's always something better to do than watch Lost, as long as Kate's onscreen. If I'm not already parked on some Kate-hating forum thread or blog, I tend to lapse into tactile fantasies about the multifarious combinations of concrete, iron and relative momentum which could pulverize the most potent source of this show's downfall: Kate's face.

this post rocks - hilarious and true! kate seriously sucks air out an otherwise excellent show. the character sucks so much that even the actress seems bored to play her. some episodes, it totally seems like the actress just phones it in. kate must die! preferably early in the season so we don't have spend the whole season watching her crazy drama.

your damn right friend. i hate looking at her. i never found her attractive, so right from the word go she irritated me.

Now, i agree. Get a clue producers. Have that bitch die a painful in show death. That would make the best episode ever!

Sir, you are my god. In one article, you managed to convey what I had tried in several articles on why I think that Kate Austen is one godawful character that deserves a gruesome death. My hat off to you!

I HATE KATE AUSTEN SO MUCH, even more than you.

Thanks for this post - I hate Kate too - mostly because she reminds me of my ex-wife.

Agree with everything you posted! =)

Thank you for your summation...I completely agree with it all! Last night I watched the season 5 episode where she gives up Aaron. Lost's sad music comes on (which worked for me a bit at Charlie's death) and tears came, and all I could think was "God I hate you Kate." I have no empathy for this woman because she is such a horrible person. I actually turned off the last third of season 4 and let my wife finish it because of all the drama Kate was adding to the show...I just couldn't take it.

Don't the show's producers know that this level of drama/anxiety doesn't actually help them?!? The only thing I can see Kate adding as a plot device is the random element: we need to do something random and horrible, lets get kate to do it.

Anonymous said...

You nailed it bro. She is the worst charachter ever. She makes me so mad. I told my wife how worthless Kate was and she just recently agreed. Kate should have the entire island fall on her, or at least that foot statue.

Dandanjr said...

I agree 100% but what really gets to me is how she has to get involved with everything, every plan or walk into the jungle she is all like "I wanna come coz i need to be involved and i need the screen time" i mean if she just didnt get involved we would see her about once a season!! Like in season 2 when michael runs off, she just has to follow and get her self caught and taken hostage i mean FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE LISTEN TO OTHERS YOU SELF ABSORBED B***H, THE WORLD DOES NOT REVOLVE AROUND WHO AND YOUR PETTY LIFE!!!

Anonymous said...

I agree 100%. I am currently watching the first episode of the final season, and while Sawyer and Juliet are having a final emotional moment together, you can hear Kate's aggravating voice in the background: "Sawyer? Sawyer, are you there?! Is Juliet ok?" thus ruining a perfectly sad moment.

And I can't count the number of times the camera has lingered on her face for longer than it needs to.

epic post and very accurate i cant believe they killed of juliet and kate survived.

I HATE kate austen so much ever since season 3. She has been toying with Jack's feeling and making Sawyer a rebound guy. Even Sawyer said to her once "you ain't gonna use me, freckles, you just need to ask"...It was for her that Juliet and Sawyer had to get off the sub and Juliet ended up dead. She could never make up her mind between jack and sawyer..she used them both for her own benefit...damn u kate...

This Post made my day, Every week, I think 'Maybe this will be the week she takes an axe to the face.' hopefully while shes bitching and moaning, like in the way Frogurt was killed. But alas, every week my hopes are stomped on with her continued existence. I have always wanted Lost to to a cross-over episode with Heroes. Sylar would cut that bitch's head within 10 seconds.

100% agree. Kate is the worst and should die. Awful, awful, awful character with no redeeming qualities.

Ashley said...

LOL, this is the most ridiculuos thing I have ever read!

Geez....looks like someone has some serious issues with women :(

Anonymous said...

Ashley, in case if you didn't notice the author has no problem with any other female character so you can stick your accusations of misogyny up your ass.

I've just started watching Lost (I wanted to wait until it was almost over) and I already hate her. Judging by the article and comments she only gets worse. Fortunately I can always fast forward through her scenes. :/

Anonymous said...

What I hate about her is that when Juliet liked jack she all of a sudden wanted him again, and when juliet was with sawyer, she wanted sawyer. When juliet died she woldnt let sawyer grieve in peace! He kept trying to be alone and she followed him the whole dang show! Her excuse was she(the expert tracker) needed his help finding claire. Out of everyone who could assist her why ask the man who just lost his partner of 3 years?? And also, she tried to make Jack stop trying to recessitate Sayid and told him to give up! Sayid has had her back 1000's of times! and as he lay seemingly dead in the temple with jack greiving, she's a few feet away stroking sawyers face because he had been knocked out earlier (as if it doesn't happen often).HOW CAN YOU SMILE AND FLIRT WHEN YOU JUST FOUND OUT ONE OF YOUR TRUEST FRIENDS WAS JUST DROWNED. AND IN THE SAME ROOM AS YOU! Do the producers actually think she's a likable character? They must know she comes off as a jerk right?

Anonymous said...

I HATE KATE MORE THAN WORDS CAN DESCRIBE. I turn off the volume when she talks to save my monitor... ebcause the last one got smashed thanks to that FUCKING BITCH. I think she gives women a bad name and the producers should be sued by a feminist organization to remove her from the show. I would pay money to see her tortured by Sayid while being fucked by the monster. Out of all the shows Ive ever seen I dont think ive ever hated a character so much. If it werent for some of the good characters in lost, I would have given up watching in season 1.

FUCK KATE. I HOPE SHE DIES> BITCH. I HATE HER ATTITUDE. SHE IS A SKINNY BITCHY WHINY FLATCHESTED COCKSUCKING WHORE WHO DOES NOTHING BUT RUIN WHAT COULD BE ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS ON TV. SHAME ON HER. .

And then, of course, this week, we see Kate miraculously survive while other better characters die. I almost threw something at the TV. She has to end. And soon.

Ugh,
So many deaths, not one Kate. She'll survive the immortal Alpert, Locke, the Island, etc.

I hate this week's episode for one reason. There was not enough Kate dying or being injured in it.

Thanks so much to those who keep confirming what I firmly believe - Kate sucks! She is a sociopath who has never felt any remorse for killing in cold blood - and I liked her in the first season.

And those of you so desperate to love her and defend her are probably sociopaths yourselves.

I wrote this and my Katred did subside in the end. I ended up thinking she was alright.

Great final season though I don't know what exactly went down. I guess it was a combo of a mutliverse and dead out thing. I didn't think they were supposed to be dead.

Canadian Girls Rock!!
Many Losties watched the show because they wanted to see more of her.
Besides the an Island always needs a Gilligan to make things interesting.

I hate her with a passion. For all of the reasons listed above plus her wide mouthed grin and buckteeth. Jin was one of my fave characters, i always cracked up when he would try to speak english and be like "others..." or "gun!", but check what I found on how to make a Kate peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Kate
1. Make separate sandwiches, one with peanut butter and one with jelly
2. Take a bite of the peanut butter sandwich, declaring it the best
3. Take a bite of the jelly sandwich, declaring it the best
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 ad infinitum
5. Follow peanut butter or jelly sandwich into grave danger

Thanks for making me love Kate. I have read well thought out comments on the Kate-hate... and I gotta say, this is one of the dumbest ones... so congratulations on that. I can see and respect why some people would hate Kate... your reasons do NOT help the cause. Starting with the getting people killed... seriously??? You blame her for Jin's "death"? She tried to go down and, like you said, Jack stopped her. If anything, it was Sun who stood there holding Aaron not doing anything. Also, Kate should NOT be blamed for Faraday's death... how about blaming his dad who knew it would happen and his mom who killed him AND knew it would happen? Juliet's death? Kate was the first one to rush over to her and tried to keep her from falling down but she couldn't (and Juliet was my favorite character)... blaming Kate for her death is just ludicrous. I have read articles that had a better chance of making me hate Kate and they didn't... this one sucks... no offense.

Hey anonymous,

I appreciate your thinking I'm an idiot. I was drunk when I wrote this and never proofread rants. I do not hate women as some of these commenters clearly do, by the by. Just this one. The getting people killed thing, actually all of it, was a joke and should be taken in JEST. So chill out. Sorry I wasn't able to get you on board with my katred. Also, this post was hilarious.

Thanks a lot for this blog man ! it was a relief to know that I'm not the only one who realizes how much of a good-for-nothing whiny arrogant weakling Kate is.

I only recently started watching the show online, and I have been really bothered by how Kate is simultaneously glorified and revealed to be the most narcissistically manipulative character ever. She gets away with everything just because she's pretty and knows it. I am a woman who has always been annoyed both by women who manipulate like that and by the ridiculous numbers of men who fall for that doe-eyed act. So I suppose in that sense she's sort of an interesting character -- or might have been if they hadn't had the camera completely obsess on her. I don't have fantasies of seeing her killed; what I most fervently wish as I watch the show is that she had been more often ignored. But men can never ignore pretty women no matter how many times they catch them lying or manipulating or doing stupid things.

It's not the people critiquing Kate's character who are sexist; it's the people who consider her an acceptable model of female behavior. Or, for that matter, of human behavior. She's way more narcissistic than Sawyer and he, at least at times, recognizes that and calls her on it. I wondered why the audience didn't recognize that, so I was grateful to find this thread. It's too bad the creators of the show didn't realize that. It would have been a better show if they'd focused less on her.

I haven't read this entire article, but I just had to point out that your comments regarding the pilot's death are completely erroneous. No one let the pilot go outside of the plane. He never left the cockpit at all. He, along with the other three, heard the monster outside and decided to go look out of a broken window. Smokey snatched him right through the window. There was nothing Jack, Kate or Charlie could have done to prevent it.

Kate's murder of Wayne Jensen wasn't "justified". She murdered him for her own selfish and insecure reasons. She couldn't stand the idea of being his natural daughter. I guess she felt that if she killed him, she could pretend that Sam Austen was her real father.

She didn't kill Wayne to protect her mother. She made that obviously clear in "What Kate Did". In other words, she wronged her mother and when faced with Diane for the last time in the "Eggtown" flashforward, she turned her back on Diane because the latter had called the cops - something she had every right to do.

Kate's hypocrisy toward Diane really annoyed me. But I don't hate her.

You guys have way to much time on your hands. To point out the most ridiculous reasons to hate on her. She is a VERY important character. Though she does cause trouble, that's what makes the show interesting. Unless you want the islanders to sit around eating mangoes for 6 seasons, Kate has to be there. I personally love Kate:) She is my favorite female role on LOST. She shows the strengths and weaknesses that women go through. She is empowering and weak. Which portrays a women very well. Sure she bounces from Jack to Sawyer, but she does that because she is lost. No one on the island is perfect. Jack cheated in his wife, Sawyer is a freaking con man, Ana lucia killed a man too, Claire got knocked up, Sun and Jin, well they were a jacked up couple from the beginning. And I'm saying this when I LOVE all of those characters:) Honestly the only GOOD (not sinner) character on LOST was John Locke. He didn't deserve what he got. And Kate had nothing to do with all the deaths. If anything she tried to help. The charlie scene where Jack was repeatedly assaulting his chest lol:) Kate was being realistic. Charlie looked dead. He was hung there for who knows how long. I know everyone has their opinion, but Kate is clearly not a bad person. Everyone on the island has there annoying whiny scenes. Locke:DON"T TELL ME WHAT I CAN'T DO! Jack: Well lets face it he pretty much cries every episode lol:) and yeah Kate she whines and gets into peoples business, but again, they all do that. Like Sun and in, it's either I love you or I hate you! And again I love all these people with all my heart:) I also love Juliet, she is my 2nd favorite. Kate tried to help her, but physically couldn't or else she would fall in the hole to. Sawyer could have done the same thing, but didn't either. I do agree though that if she didn't convince Juliet and Sawyer to get off the sub it wouldn't have happened, but if you think about it. Jack was the one who wanted to set off the bomb, as well as Farday. Kate was not the only one at fault. Personally I think every character has something to hate about them and something to love. With Kate it's her whiny ways, but I like her because she is strong and not afraid, she doesn't sit back and do nothing. That's why the show is so great. They did't make the characters perfect. None of them are perfect. Which is why this show is so relateable. That was really wrong but I'm just proving a point.

A friend of mine posted a Lost reference and I typed my favorite quote and mentioned my Kate hate. Never saw this page before googling kate hate. Spot on. I had a feeling she wanted Sawyer for the thrill but he lacked stability and liked jack for 'stability' but there was no thrill. Figured she'd eventually dump both for the next chump she could use (had the show gone on for years)...

I know it's late, but I'm re-watching Lost and I just have to share in the Kate-Hate! I don't think I'm going to make it very far through this re-watch. She has absolutely NO redeeming qualities!

Anonymous said...

I just rewatched season 1 and realized that Kate is kind of annoying. I did like her in the very beginning where she was all "hey look how pretty and skinny I am! I can be tough and hang out with the guys!" But the whole Jack and Sawyer thing is irritating (Sawyer annoys me as well, but at least his back story was more interesting). When Jack was trying to save Charlie after being hung she kept getting in the way, like bitch let him do his thing and you go cry in a corner.

Anonymous said...

Hilarious!!! Soooo right, I thought I was the only one who hated Kate!!

Anonymous said...

What irritates me the most is that Kate tries to victimize herself in regards to Sawyer. She USED him!! Sawyer actually had feelings for her skank ass, but all she wanted sawyer for was to play high school games to get Jack jealous...so pathetic. Cassidy was hurt by Sawyer NOT Kate she always has to be the "victim". She should have died in the plane crash and taken her daddy issues with her.

Anonymous said...

Lost would of been so much better if kate wasnt such a annoying person on the show. Not to mention she should have died. She got shot in the chest, and then that wound was exposed to salt water for about 40 mins. I also hate how she has sex with anything that walks and then fucks that same person over (metaphorically). OSIDHFLKSDFJ:L i hate her so much

Anonymous said...

Haha I thought I was the only one that noticed how she ALWAYS yells jacks name, just absolutely pointless! I'm glad to know other people hate this character and agree she's always trying to get into things she doesn't belong in JUST for the sake of meddling. And of course someone more interesting gets killed and she's always the damsel in distress that gets saved. Its not fair. The only reason she's the main female character is because of her looks, which aren't that special. I find the other female characters to be way more beautiful than she is, inside and out

I am just so happy to read the blog. I just finished 5th season and in the middle of 6th. I was short of words for that bitch. She uses two people and hits plays everyone who helped her. The most important thing is whenever she doesn't agree with Jack IT(yeah.. ) goes to sawyer, and the otherway too. Ben is lier, killed people and villain for most of the way. but I want kate suffer(not dead..) more than anything.

Thank you all for hating kate so much. I could ease my mind a little now.

Anonymous said...

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who hates her. Like in the last season when she leaves the temple to go look for Sawyer (I guess so she can fuck him now that Juliet is dead) the black guard stops her from setting off a trap. Her way of thanking him? Setting the trap off on him, knocking him out after she attacks Aldo for rightfully being angry about her knocking him out. Also hilarious to see Mac from it's Always Sunny in anything other than the role of Mac. Kate is the worst character on that show, no doubt about it. I consistently hoped she would die. Evangeline Lilly is very cute, but Kate Austen is a murdering piece of shit. I don't care if the guy beat your mother, it's your mothers decision to be with him, not yours, you're not judge jury and executioner so just fucking die already cunt.

Kate's scenes are unbearable to watch, with an even more unrealistic, unnecessary backstory slowing the entire plot of Lost. Yes, she is extremely hot but her acting is almost like that of just watch my legs Jessica Alba style. Who the hell cares that she blows up her drunken father and cries everyday about it. Too unrealistic to spend a century of her fussing over it and getting herself in more unnecessary trouble (always gets caught) Perhaps, that is just the definition of Kate. Plus, let's not forget to add that she roofies people (the doctor and her cop husband).

Anonymous said...

lol she roofiez them. after watching any episode focusing on that ho i feel like i need to rant about her or take a break from watching more

Stop blaming Kate for all the things that happen in Lost. She is an amazing character, you are all just jealous of her. If you are dumb enough to think that Sawyer jumped to get away from her, think again. I am disgusted by this blog, and by all the Kate haters.Oh and your comment about the toy plane, that was her best friends plane. So she has a lot of reasons to cry over it! If you were in her shoes, you'd do the same thing. You all need to look at things through her point of view. This blog is pointless, and yes, I know I am commenting on it and have read it. But that's only because I couldn't even begin to believe someone could hate Kate. Kate Austen is my favorite character, and she is amazing, and many others would agree with me.

Thank you! this pretty much sums up everything i feel about the character of the show. When i first watched this show apon release, i was a little annoyed with this character...but now when im rewatching the show; i do realize that kate has ruined what could have potentially been a great series. the directors/producers have really took a left turn when they decided to make kate a major character in the series.

Anonymous said...

Man this post made my day! i liked kate in season 1, but in rest of the seasons (i just finished season 4) she is a real bitch!
Im tired of her back story and her forever frowning-about-to-cry facial expression. yeah right she's got abusive dad and sad life, but that doesn't justify all those her crimes!!! and she actually got away with them using another girls baby boy, it was disgusting hearing her calling aaron " my son"! right the "oceanic six" agreed to make up the story just to save the lives of everyone else left on the island, but why agreeing to let kate pretend to be aaron's mother? so unfair
and the whole jack-kate-sawyer relationship is just boring.
kate auten actually make this show frustrating every time she shows her face. I HATE HER, I HATE THE ACTRESS'S PERFORMANCE! and reading the previous reviews about her dumbness in season5 and 6 make me want to just stop watching the show!!

from antiquate austen forum:
Her name is Kate.
She's the character that we hate!
Her second name is Austen.
And she is Discustin'!
She is the island whore,
yet she is such a bore!
Her hair is rank and she always sweats,
She's the worst character ever, wanna take bets?
She reckons she a godess when if fact shes a beast,
she needs to brush her nasty hair at least!
She thinks she is Mary-Sue
If only she had a clue.
She's a selfish witch.
Scratch that, she's a selfish bitch!
She walks around like shes the queen of the beach,
When in fact shes about as interesting as a slimy leech!
There are lots of reasons Kate is so hated,
But most of all its because she always looks constipated!
She brings out the worst in everyone.
With all the chocolate's she eats we're surprised she doesn't weigh a ton!
She thinks it's all about her, she is so vain!
And who gives a crap about her stupid toy plane?
She molested a semi concious Sawyer,
He should probably get a lawyer!
When she wants to look happy, sad or smart,
all she does is pretends she smells a fart!

I HATE HER. Question is, what is that one reason to NOT hate her? I get liking two guys at the same time but alternately sleeping with them is like what? WHORE LAND!
The only good thing she ever did was help Claire deliver the baby, with all fairness, that's the ONLY good thing she ever did in her entire life.
Season one, she's fine (fine like ok, I can ignore that shit you did) but as the show goes on, I just can't take her anymore.
What I hate the most about her is her thinking she is so perfect and always right that she never ever ever blamed herself (genuinely) for all the terrible things she's done. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't remember her saying sorry at all.
BITCH! Just go kill yourself!

JULIET is a zillion times better than her.

LOVEJULIET said...

ok, I goggled and she did say sorry once,
KATE TO JACK: "SORRY, I KISSED YOU"

Binge watching Lost again on Netflix. Am reminded why I disliked Kate and Jack so much the first time I watched it. Most nauseating and whiny television characters ever.

Anonymous said...

I like Kate. she got kind of annoying at times, but who on this show hasn't? she's really not that bad. and she doesn't give females a bad rep...not sure where you're getting that from? she's complex. and she had quite a redemptive arc thru the entirety of the series.
I think people hate Kate because of this: at some point in time, someone declared 'I hate kate!', then. someone else followed suit. after a while, it became fashionable for people to hate kate, so of course everyone had to jump on the bandwagon so they wouldn't be in the minority. or fear retribution from the katers and be called 'sociopathic' for liking the character. you know, bullied because they didn't share the katred. kind of sad really, all the sheep saying baa at the same time.
In my not so humble opinion,
Locke, Michael, and Hurley are the worst, most annoying, worthless, pathetic, faggot characters on this show, in that order. from episode 1 to 121, they always were. I fuckin hate those guys. they're just so stupid.

Anonymous said...

Kate is great! everyone loves her. even the people who say they don't. they're just in denial because they have intense sexual feelings for her, male or female. it's like when kids bully each other on the playground when they have a crush. she is such an outstanding character and woman, people don't know how to react. so they judge. but if everyone stopped worrying about appearances and what people thought them, there would be a 50 foot idol of her in Times Square that millions of people would worship every day. she epitomizes perfection and sexuality. she's a wonderful human being on the inside and outside and there isn't a single living person who genuinely hates Kate. she's perfect in each and every way and I just wish people would acknowledge their true feelings and finally let the love flow, I think it would be very cathartic for most. fuck yeah kate! you go girl. you have the support of every human being on earth.

ps she's not my favorite character on the show. that award goes to Juliet. don't even get me started on her. but Kate is just too amazing and doesn't deserve all of these harsh words. she is a goddess and she could blow all of you up if she wanted. that she hasn't should show you what a kind and empathetic woman she is.

Anonymous said...

Absolutely brilliant post!
The best part is her egocentricity and zero self awareness.
Whenever she's ashamed of something or things get close, she runs away - as if everyone would haunt her and nobody else till the end of time.
I mean come on! We are humans, not planets. Not everything revolves around us. She takes herself and all threats too seriously and acts aggressively like a little bitch. Yea that's it. A little bitch. Acting aggressively ain't tough, it's weak. Constantly running away ain't a sign of being any kind of a tough girl, as opposed to how the show presents her.

Some totally mixed up value system in the writer's perspective there.

My HATRED for Kate (read "most annoying multi-cellular organism in the whole fucking universe") = (sum total of hatreds of all people who have posted their comments PLUS that of the author) multiplied by "X" !! (where X = no. of times you felt like smashing your screen + no. of times you muted your TV + no. of times you looked away from your screen + no. of times you fast forwarded the video + no. of times you paused to seriously explain to your wife why you hate her so much which only led to a very big argument from your wife saying "you have a problem with all women" )

And when you finally calculate the value of my hatred for Kate, multiply it by Hurley's weight in pounds to get final value.

THAT'S HOW MUCH I HATE HER. I am not a mathematician but I had to bring in some Math to express the intensity of my hatred... this bitch leaves you short for words... I am sure you all have had moments where you were just short of words to express anger and you ended up punching your sofa or wall or baby... btw does anyone know where that island is ? Coz I am working on a time machine so that I can go back to 2004 and go to that island and do things to her... you know... all sorts of things... like really bad things...like paint "JACK" on a bluewhale and shove it inside her type of things.... it's time for my anger management therapy.... that BITCH...look where she has brought me!

I 100% agree with this blog, binge watching lost on Netflix again, and I cannot stop throwing hate towards every action she takes. Just watched episode where they find briefcase in waterfall basin and I wanted to cunt punt her for manipulating jack to get the case and key for her, lying to sawyer and jack about why she wanted and pretty much about everything, in not just this episode but almost every episode until she really can't lie b/c everyone knows she's a liar, and trying to get away with stealing the key thinking Jack was a moron and wouldn't notice. I cannot stand her and it seems like anyone that does like her is an uneducated child, most likely tween little girls, because no adult intelligent person should excuse the way she acts and treats others. She's someone that if you knew her in real life, you would disassociate with her due to her deceit and self centered attitude. I reiterate, I FUCKING HATE THIS CUNT!!

Oh and a new complaint no one has mentioned, in the episode where the raft is launched, at the beginning of the episode, Charlie makes Kate realize when they are found the group will be eternally famous, making Kate eternally infamous. In realizing this she tries to weasel her way onto the raft, and I applaud michael at first for telling that maniacal cunt off, and sticking to the deal he had with sawyer, which she instantly tries to twist into a negative to get on the raft, but ruins it by believing that lying cunt about sawyer trying to poison him. What no one has mentioned is in her final feeble attempt to manipulate her way onto the raft, she tries to selfishly get michael to give Walt's spot on the raft to her, because it is too "dangerous". That has got to be the most self centered, bitch-ass, piece of shit thing to do. How can anyone see her as a strong woman, yet she would rather separate a father and son, to further her own twisted needs. I wish sawyer put a bullet in her head when he confronted her about trying to snake his spot, or at least knocked her ass out when she says to him " I want your spot, I'll get your spot" however is was ecstatic when he calls her out about stealing Joanna's passport, and the tells her how it is by announcing that she only cares about herself in front of everyone, a beautiful "FUCK YEA" moment. How the hell can anyone support a sociopathic bitch like her, she cares about no one but herself, always want to be a part of the "expeditions" yet when jack needs her to deliver Claire's child she wants no part, then makes the situation about herself when Claire says she's scared, her response is "I'm scared too". How fucking selfish can one person get? A normal caring person would tell her "everything is going to be ok" and that she's going to take care of her by any means possible/necessary. Instead she makes it about her own emotions, and takes away from making sure the woman in labor is comfortable and reassured. Fuck her!! I really wish she was decapitated in the crash or blown up with the dynamite, or Ethan chose her for his first kill instead of Scott. She's a cancer and causes nearly every problem the group encountered. All supporters of Kate are completely blind, and I'm willing to bet those of you who do support her, hold the same selfish, egocentric, maniacal, lying, bitchy and cunty traits she holds, and are too blind to realize that most people that know you probably notice those traits and avoid you at all costs. I loathe, abhor, and genuinely HATE Kate and people like her, and people that support her. Stop acting like you don't know why she is so easily abhorred, because is you can't notice there are some completely transparent and crystal clear reasons for the hate, that her supporters are completely blind to. Anyone that tries to explain why she "is awesome" is dumb as rocks, b/c there is no way to explain a fallacy like supporting that annoying, evil bitch.

Very nice post. It is nice to know there are other like minded individuals who have a hatred for this cunt as much as i do. The part where she manipulates Jack and tries to sneak the key to the fucking gun safe is what cemented my already festering hatred for this self-centered whore. What a sneaky fucking manipulative bitch. Its ashame that through all of the shootout scenes in the show that she wasnt taken out by a stray bullet. Also the way she used Hurley to find out where Miles was being held, without any regard to Hurley being in trouble with Locke for telling her since he was the leader there at the Barracks.
I really dont think she is all that great looking either. I think her appearance is okay at times but also extremely overrated. Id say Juliet, Horace's wife (drawing a blank on her name), and a few of the other women in the show are much better looking and arent nearly as trashy. The way she always have to fucking be involved in everything, even things that dont concern her in any way just makes my teeth hurt from clenching them along with my fists in disgust.

I watch Lost when it first aired but never really thought anything negative about Kate but now rewatching it I hate this woman. She starts so annoying bc everything said in this post. I've never heard "i hate Kate" before but googled annoying Kate wonder if this was a thing when the show was on. Not should what in my life experience that made me look at her different in my eyes but she ruins everything by making it about her. She's selfish as hell and make women look bad.

I love how she makes Faraday stroll on through the pylons first, in S05 E14 - The Variable. You talk about it a bit when you said that she let Jack get him killed by his mother.

But I was waiting for THIS part. It really pissed me the fuck off, that is why I searched for and found on Google, this blog, which I've truly enjoyed man! Seriously. As much as I hate Kate, letting Daniel walk through to make sure she turned them off right after entering the code, it was so obvious, like, it was like the producers wanted us to know 4 sure that YES. She's a little ass bitch who is too afraid to die. That's it, really. She's too afraid to die. Always jumpin on to the next guy, because she's in need of protection, yet she's always talkin up this independent tough girl B.S. that really is just her insecurities because she is also too afraid to get her teeth knocked out in jail. What a waste of talentless hormones.

Tbh the people who hate Kate tend to be pretty mysoginistic about it, I wouldn't mind if they wouldn't have to bring up "stupid whore" all the time lol. Kate was a complex character that wasn't always likeable. Imo she had potential to be great in the early seasons but the writers decided to use her a love prop. I understand why people get annoyed by her but the hate really creeps me out!

They managed to love Sawyer and Sayid despite the fact that those characters did truly horrendous things in their life. She killed her abusive father and the other things weren't exactly her fault. Sawyer made 30 years living in ruining people's lives and Sayid TORTURED people. Yet they can be redeemed? Huh. I never liked Kate BC I found her useless but like I said, I think a lot of the hate she gets is really mysoginistic-based.

This article is spot on. I LOATHE, ABHOR, and generally DESPISE Kate with a fiery passion! Evry single one of you bullet points are the exact reasons for my hatred, however, you left one out, her overall story makes zero sense. How is it possible that someone who is on the run for so long, is able to outsmart US Marshalls, so fucking stupid and a complete fuck up on the island? She does nothing right, and is always getting caught on the island, but somehow manages to be a fugitive for years? It makes absolitely no sense whatsoever. Based on her island "contributions" the stupid bitch should have been caught pre-Oceanic crash fairly quickly. She sucks, I loathe her, and she should have died in the first season. I applaud you my fellow Kate hater, and may we have dreams of her many wished timely demises which never happened due to all the stupid female fans of the show that are oblivious to her suckitude because they find her to be a "role model" for strong females, and fail to see how stupid and her protayal of how never to act if you want to be a likable person in real life.

Oh this is so old, but I started rewatching Lost (I didn't watch it when it was new, but tried to sit through it a few times in the last few years). And I began to realize the reason I may never make it far into the series is because of Kate. I had this epiphany in episode 8 where Sawyer says he'll trade Shannon's inhalers for a kiss with Kate. Before that everyone on the island is acting like fangirl shippers putting her and Jack together and Sayid is pretty obsessed with her too - which Sawyer points out, though ironically neglecting to mention that he is too at the same time.

She's the epitome of Mary Sue. Despite being a terrible character everyone is in love with her at first sight. It's like no other women exist on this island and all these men have been without a woman in the lives for years before crashing here. And desperation of that magnitude is the only way I could imagine anyone cuddling up to manipulative, whiny, thinks-she's-perfect Kate.

I'm really sad to see that 1. I don't get to look forward to her dying anytime soon and 2. she didn't turn out to be a villain of some sort. Oh, she's a villain in that she ruins everything she touches by being a manipulative douche, but the show never acknowledges it. If the show acknowledged that she's manipulative and doing bad things it wouldn't be so bad. And I thought for sure after the Marshall said she was manipulative and criticized Jack for falling for it already it was going to become a story point that these men would suffer or have to wise up around her. Apparently the writers forgot that the Marshall said anything significant though and decided Kate was a shining beacon of what women should be.

If they wanted a shining beacon tough girl to focus on they should have used Claire. Pregnant on an island with a bunch of strangers, tries to always look at the bright side and thinks about others' needs and feelings despite her own fears and misgivings.

I might be late but here is one easily missed. Sun tries to make Jin sick, whose idea? Kate. In the caves earlier before it was revealed she poisoned Micheal through Suns ineptitude. Anyway in the cave she asks Jack if he thought she was capable of such a deed when Jack asked if she was responsible she puts on a hurt "I cant believe you think I am capable of that" look and storms out while she did..

She goes around, fucking and using men, and then slapping them when they called her out. Like she expects them to worship her even though she uses them. I get it - all the characters are supposed to be "lost" in their lives and then they find meaning in their lives and are no longer "lost".

Meanwhile, Kate is a murdering psychopath whose own mom is scared of her - and she manipulates/lies to the people on the Island (more evidence that she is a true psychopath) - and she never resolves being "lost".

Very annoying.

Kate the most annoying character ever in a series. I watched the whole series but skipped most of her scenes. The actress who played her was awful, can't act. Walked around like she has no clue, ruined everything she touched. Caused the death of the best female character,Juliet. Wish they had killed Kate

Ugh. Here it is YEARS after this thread started, and I have been through four or five of Lost episodies on Netflix, and I can't stand it anymore. I'm not watching it anymore. Guess why. Yeah, it's Kate. Ugh. She's so despicable I actually went out of my way to google it to see if other people felt the same way...and came across this thread. I had to add my two cents. I'm not watching any more episodes. She entirely ruins the show. So many other good characters though...what a shame they had to insert this character into the series.

Rewatching early season 3 when she, Sawyer and Jack are captive on the other island and holy shit is she obnoxious and annoying. Her BS with Sawyer AND with Jack are at their pinnacle here and I want her to die. Her scream/cry/whine she does is like nails down a chalkboard .... her refusal to fucking LISTEN and do what is being asked to SAVE HER LIFE is mind numbing.

Similar to Locke and his bullshit at the end of season 2 when he was at his bitchiness and ridiculous nonsense about the button and his insistence that it all means nothing - endangering everyone's lives and, if not for Desmond saving the day, would have killed everyone on the island, if not the world (I guess??). All because he didn't want to be a 'slave' to the island. Of course, he COULD just walk away and ignore the button for good and let others deal with it. But nope - has to be what HE wants. He and Kate are both the most egocentric characters on the show hands down.

Anonymous said...

meh, the points all seem to reflect your own point of view. honestly, i disagree with most of them.

the character that pissed me off most was Jack. its like he was always trying to be in the spotlight. trying so hard for other people on the island to see him as a hero and constantly thinking hes above everyone else. the entire series, he tried to get off the island, but when Jacob was looking for a replacement for himself, he took the title of guardian straight away, claiming that it was his destiny and that he is ment to be there -.-

I share your opinions on everything. It basically can all be summed up by accepting Kate is a textbook sociopath. She does have some sort of twisted sense of right and wrong, but she just thinks that she is the most important person un the world and that she knows better than anyone. Another trait of sociopaths is that they are always taking stupid risks because they think that by doing so other people will think she is cool, and if she messes up she just makes lame excuses and flirt her way out of anything. Also, even tho she pretends to care, everything she does in the show is for her own benefict.

My only doubt regarding Kate is why the writers/directors try so hard to make her a good and relateable character. Even tho she is constantly lying to everyone, they all seem to like her and forgive her for everything. I remember in the last season when Kate gets in a taxi with a pregnant Claire, she points a gun at her, takes her hostage and then steal all her shit, only to come back 10 minutes later and they are suddenly bffs, and Claire trusts her with everything. It just doesn't make any sense why she is so loved, even the Marshall seems to like her. The only sensible person in the entire show is her mother, who tries to send her to jail, but in the end she falls victim to her manipulation like everyone else and refuses to testify.

Anonymous said...

I agree, I really dislike the way she constantly switched between batting her eyelashes at jack to sawyer. it's like the show tried to make her the kind of cool badass you looked up to but failed miserably. that being said, the hate on evangeline is unnecessary - dont bash on her just because she played a character you don't like.

I hate Kate Austen for all the comments already mentioned above and more but no one mentioned the one thing she did that really made me wish she had been killed somewhere before the sixth episode. It was the scene where Juliet and Sawyer were sailing in the submarine off the island, hoping for a better future and suddenly the atmosphere changed when Kate jumped in and began to stir the pool like she always does whenever she senses some people have some happiness she was not going to be a part of. I think sweet Juliet began to think she will never stand a chance with Sawyer whenever the sex goddess was around, so they abandoned their prospective peace and of course Juliet turned around to her death. How Kate manages to convince others to do stupid things is beyond my imagination. In the end, the idea of turning around the sub so that they can save Jack and prevent him from blowing away the island changed again when Kate ended up supporting him to do it. The second time I heard her say sorry was when he went to look for Sawyer after he left the temple and she told him she was sorry to have caused Juliet's death as if that changes anything about her cruel nature

In the Lost time-line, the first death she was responsible for was that of her abusive father, which was justified I guess, but I don’t care about that.

Kate's murder of her father WAS NOT justified. She didn't kill him to "save" her mother. She killed him because she couldn't deal with the idea of him being her father. His death was all about her insecurities and anger.
